Smoking out of a glass pipe is the preferred method for many stoners. They’re visually appealing, easy to use and provide a smooth hit. But after some time, you’ll notice a buildup of gunk and residue inside your pipe. That means it’s time for some cleaning.
Keeping your glass pipe clean is crucial for not only a smooth smoking experience, but a healthy one too.
Whether you use a traditional glass pipe, bubbler or one-hitter, you’ll want to make sure that it stays clean for maximum enjoyment. Take a look below to see the importance of cleaning your glass pipe, when to know it’s time for a cleaning, and how to go about doing so.
With continuous use of a glass pipe, you’ll notice residue building up, resulting in possible clogging and affecting the weed’s taste. When you smoke from a dirty pipe, you also run the risk of inhaling combusted resin and ash which is detrimental to your health. Regularly cleaning your pipe both enhances the smoking experience andpro extends the lifespan of your piece.
It should be fairly easy to tell when your pipe needs cleaning. Look for visual signs such as noticeable resin build-up and discolored glass. You may also notice that it’s becoming difficult to draw smoke, or the weed doesn’t taste quite right.
In order to properly maintain your piece, we recommend you clean it after every few sessions. Having said that, you should generally clean it whenever you feel it’s necessary based on the taste and appearance of the pipe.
If you’re able to, we always recommend using a high-end pipe cleaning solution like the Klear Kryptonite formula. Beyond being specifically made for glass pipes, the cleanser also allows for a simple process that never gets too messy.
With Kryptonite, just pour some in, shake it around so that it evenly covers your piece, and rinse it out with warm water after sitting for 20 to 30 minutes. Cleaning has never been more convenient.
If you’re unable to get a bottle of a cleanser specifically designed for cleaning pipes and bongs, you can also use some other tools such as:
If you do not have a cannabis-specific cleaning solution on hand, you may want to try at it with materials you might already have. Here’s a quick way to clean your glass pipes DIY if you’re in a pinch:
Step 1 - Preparation: Start by emptying the pipe of any ash or weed and running warm water through it.
Step 2 - Soaking: Pour some isopropyl alcohol and salt into a zip-lock bag and allow the pipe to soak until the residue is loosened. This can take a few hours if the pipe hasn’t been cleaned in a while.
Step 3 - Shake and Scrub: Gently shake the pipe around in the bag for a few minutes to make sure the solution enters all of the crevices. Once this is done, take out the pipe and scrub any remaining residue with a pipe cleaner or cotton swab.
Step 4 - Rinse and Dry: Once the pipe is clean, rinse it again with warm water to ensure all the solution is removed. Then wait for it to completely dry before using it again.
Regularly flush it with warm water and wipe the exterior down with alcohol or wipes designed specifically for glass pieces. Doing so can help limit the amount of work needed when you perform a deeper clean of the entire pipe in the future.
When you are cleaning your pipe, do so gently. Do not rub or scrub the surface of the glass with too much pressure, and make sure that you are handling it with dry hands to avoid dropping it. Nothing kills the vibe like prepping your piece for a new sesh only for it to fall and shatter before you can pack the bowl.
Once you’ve cleaned your piece, using a plug and cap system like the Hemper Plugs + Caps Pro any cleaners from leaking out of the openings in a bong or dab rig so that you don’t have to worry about messy fingers in the process.
Keep your pipe in a dry, cool environment where dust will not accumulate. If you can, keep it in a box or a container that will keep dust away.
Don’t want to clean the same pipe over and over? By rotating more than one pipe in your collection, you can take more time between cleanings and spend more time enjoying your favorite strains through quality pieces.
Avoid chemical-based household cleaners that are not designed for glass pipes. These cleaners may not be well-suited to tackling sticky resin and may also leave residue on your pipe, which you don’t want to inhale when smoking out of it.
When using an appropriate specialized cleaner, make sure that you are still following the manufacturer’s instructions for using it. This will help ensure that your piece is cleaned to the fullest with no residue behind.
